The Blossoming of Faith – Building a Mission Centre in Vanua Levu

In the quiet town of Vanua Levu, the second-largest island of Fiji, a quiet miracle has been unfolding for more than a decade. What began as a modest effort to plant the Orthodox Church in the soil of the Pacific has grown into a flourishing spiritual community. The story of the Church in Vanua Levu is a story of transformation, of faith taking root through simplicity, suffering, and hope.

The Orthodox presence in Vanua Levu began in 2012 with the arrival of a humble priest—Fr. Varnavas, a man who had once been a Hindu before his conversion to Christ and ordination to the holy priesthood. With no great resources, but with great zeal, Metropolitan Amfilochios with hard work of Fr Varnava and the early faithful converted an old building which was purchased, into a small chapel and a modest house for the priest. It was not much by the world’s standards, but it became a place of light and warmth, where prayers were offered and lives began to change. Through baptisms, Liturgies, and the tireless service of Fr. Varnavas, the community slowly blossomed.

By 2015, the need for something more permanent was becoming clear. The faithful had grown, the services multiplied, and the limits of the simple chapel were being felt. In that same year, a significant act of vision and blessing took place: the then Metropolitan and founder of the Orthodox Mission in the Pacific came to lay the foundation stone for a future church and dedicated to the Glorious Apostles Bartholomew and Barnabas, two great missionaries of the early Church. It was a prophetic gesture—planting something for the future, for a Church not yet fully visible, but already alive in the hearts of the people.

Fr. Varnavas continued his quiet and faithful ministry for many years, becoming not just a priest but a father to the community. His life was not easy, marked by health challenges and limited means, but he served with joy and simplicity. When he passed away, the loss was deeply felt—but he left behind a legacy of faith and of lives transformed by Christ.

One of those lives was a young man who had grown up near him, learning by watching, by serving, by listening. Two years ago, that young man was ordained to the priesthood, and now continues the work that Fr. Varnavas began. The flame that was lit in 2012 continues to burn, now carried in new hands—but with the same spirit.

Today, the time has come to build what was once only imagined: a proper church and Mission Centre that will not only serve the existing community but become a place of hospitality, catechesis, and outreach for the wider island and beyond. It will be a visible sign of the Church’s rootedness and commitment, offering a home for prayer, learning, and fellowship.

In the Pacific, nothing grows quickly. The land teaches patience, and the sea creates vast distances. In Vanua Levu, a foundation has been laid not only in stone but in hearts. Now is the moment to build upon that foundation, to honour the past, support the present, and prepare for a future that only God can fully see. The Church is alive, and it is growing—not by force, but by grace; not by wealth, but by love.

As the walls rise in Vanua Levu they will not only shelter a congregation—they will speak of continuity, of the Gospel made flesh in a Fijian village, and of a God who is faithful to His people wherever they are found.
